“Gold Star” is a term derived from American Gold Star Mothers Inc., who were formed in 1928 as a family response to lives taken during the first World War. Now, Gold Star is applied to family members who have lost a loved one serving in the U.S. military.

This living monument is a gathering place for those who want to commemorate the lives of those who volunteered to protect this country.

Inspired by a Gold Star Mother’s love for her fallen Army son, the Veterans Memorial Gold Star Healing and Peace Garden is a thoughtfully designed commemorative arboretum dedicated to all who serve in the United States Armed Forces.

This living monument is a gathering place to honor and remember, especially those fighting in the war on terror.

A series of meditative spaces or rooms, the Garden is arrayed around the Central Plaza of Honor. Each area is planted with a particular color to represent a core value of character trait found at the heart of all service personnel.

Red represents Courage
Orange represents Duty & Service
Yellow represents Remembrance
Green represents Healing
Blue represents Fidelity
Purple represents Valor
White represents Honor

The garden makes tangible these core ideals and roots them in the ground to allow these noble characteristics to come alive. Each room is connected to the Central Plaza of Honor. The very center of the Plaza holds a bubbling fountain, symbol of cleansing, joy and refreshment as well as hope of ever flowing life. On the dividing black granite Wall of Valor between the Plaza of Honor and the garden rooms will be inscribed the names of the fallen in the war on terror. As you visit the Garden, the earth will bring forth in its seasons therapeutic qualities in color, fragrance and texture, making it a living memorial. Each visit will be different, as wildlife and butterflies invite us to reflect on all that is wonderful in America. Designed as a place not of repose, but of active remembrance, the garden offers a space apart from the cares of this hectic world to meditate, remember and celebrate not only the lives listed on the Wall of Valor, but all those who engage in action to provide solutions for the troubles of the world.

Stroll the Walk of the Intrepid. One step at a time, create new memories. Emerge from the garden feeling restored and full of appreciation for those willing to serve on our behalf.

“The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.” -GK Chesterton
